A Russian in America: Ilya Yashin's Travelogue
5 Jul 2010
In honor of the holiday, just a short post today. Not a post, at all, really, but a partial repost and recommendation that anyone with some spare time on this blazing-hot Monday take a look at Ilya Yashin’s recent blogging about his tour of the United States.
Suddenly the amateur anthropologist/ethnographer, Yashin has visited Washington DC, NYC, San Francisco, and Sacramento — all in the last week. He’s taken some admittedly awesome photographs, and his commentary is actually a little charming, I confess. Sometimes he exaggerates American super-duperness in order to take a cheap shot at Russian shortcomings, but for the most part this is an innocent travelogue, ‘a Russian in America,’ complete with Harlem street dancing (see above) and chats with California bums (see below).
Check out his posts: DC, NYC, Harlem, SF, Sacramento
Read on for some choice photos with Yashin’s captions…

Per your request
1.A boy is studying the American history. He is reaching for knowledge, if you can say so.
2.Ducks and the famous Lincoln’s monument.
3. These enterprising vendors are selling “Obama condoms.” Slogan “feel yourself as the First Lady” works like a charm.
3. It’s easy to recognize our former compatriot by his accent, although he lived on Brighton Beach already for 15 years and got US citizenship long time ago. He has already managed to get divorce, to get rich and to get broke; he has barely escaped prison, lived through few depressions and binge-drinking, and by now he occupies himself by selling sausages.
4. New-York is a city of sexual freedom. You can constantly see people with rainbow symbols lurking in the crowd. No one is paying attention at men walking hand in hand.
5. President Obama still brings hope to New-Yorkers.
6. This fella was trying to rob the register of the small store on the Canal(?) street. The policemen have disarmed hapless gangster pretty fast.
6. By the way I’ve noticed that Harlem is patrolled by Black cops for the most part.
7. And I saw Harlem girls reciting dance on one of the streets.
8. On one of the street corners I was surrounded by four guys, who were yelling something in my face, waving their hands and pointing at my camera. All I could make out of their words was “man” and “motherfucker,” but surprisingly enough I did get the idea; why the hell are you, whitey taking pictures in our district?
8. There are still plenty of Milk’s(?) fans in the city. Taxi cab of this guy is decorated with a rainbow flag; he lives in the very Castro district, and believes that one day a gay can become a US president.
9. Floating from a fog – Golden Gates Bridge. I don’t quite understand why it’s called “Golden” if its color is really red.
10. This homeless bum is not losing heart – he collects money to buy a ticket to Venezuela. He says that he supports Chavez and communism and that capitalism sucks.

I would love to see a comparison between Yashin’s and Ilf and Petrov’s American Road Trip http://amzn.to/dvvfjQ
